Funding your degree

Under certain circumstances a degree can be financed through a grant. Various organisations provide funding for the duration of degrees taken in Germany. A few grants are also available for periods of study abroad, from one semester up to a whole degree.

A few organisations support both German and foreign students and graduates. Within the framework of its partnerships with foreign universities, the Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences can obtain Socrates/Erasmus grants for its students (see Applications for partner universities).

Grants from the state and educational support loans from the BAföG (German student loans company) are regarded as state or semi-state support. The same applies to grants that come from organisations close to the state and originate from endowments, including those made by political parties. Grants from industry, local government and churches are also available for students and graduates.

The distribution of grants may depend on financial need and/or on the particular gifts of the student. Social involvement is often preferred. In most cases students can apply directly to the organisation concerned. In other cases you must be recommended to the organisation by a university lecturer.
